Nollywood actor Prince Eke has criticised many Nigerian celebrities for failing to use their influence to speak out against poor leadership and corruption in the country.
The actor made the remarks in a post shared on his Instagram page, where he expressed disappointment over what he described as the lack of courage among entertainers to challenge political leaders despite the growing hardship faced by ordinary Nigerians.
According to Eke, a large number of actors and musicians deliberately avoid addressing issues of bad governance because they hope to benefit from political patronage during election periods. He claimed that many entertainers prefer to align themselves with politicians who offer them financial rewards to perform or show support during campaigns.
The Nollywood star argued that if Nigeria had a well-structured and functional entertainment industry, many celebrities would not need to rely on politicians for survival. He noted that actors and musicians should ideally be earning steady royalties from their past creative works, including movies and music released many years ago.
Eke lamented that instead of advocating for reforms that would strengthen the industry and protect the financial rights of creatives, some celebrities choose to remain silent while the nation struggles with corruption and poor governance.
He further alleged that financial struggles within the entertainment industry have made some celebrities desperate, leading them to compromise their values in exchange for monetary gains or political favour.
In his words, Nigerians should stop expecting celebrities to serve as moral voices or agents of change, as many of them are primarily concerned about personal survival and financial stability.
Eke concluded his message with a popular Nigerian phrase suggesting that moral principles alone do not provide livelihood, implying that some entertainers are willing to sacrifice their conscience if it guarantees them income.
The actor’s comments have since sparked conversations on social media about the role of celebrities in political discourse and whether public figures in the entertainment industry should take stronger stands on issues affecting the country.
