President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to defeat terrorism and safeguard Nigeria’s unity, stressing that the country will never succumb to forces attempting to destabilise it.
The President made this statement on Monday during an interfaith Iftar gathering held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he hosted prominent religious and traditional leaders from across the country. The event, organised as part of efforts to promote national unity and cooperation among diverse groups, brought together representatives from different faiths and traditional institutions.
Addressing the gathering, Tinubu spoke candidly about Nigeria’s security challenges, particularly the persistent threat posed by terrorist groups. He noted that although violent attacks continue to occur in some parts of the country, security forces remain resolute in their operations to dismantle these networks.
According to the President, the increasing aggression by insurgent groups signals desperation as military and security agencies intensify their efforts against them. He assured Nigerians that the government remains fully committed to eliminating the threat and restoring lasting peace throughout the country.
Tinubu emphasised that Nigeria would not be intimidated by acts of violence, adding that his administration will persist in its mission until stability is firmly established nationwide.
Beyond security issues, the President also addressed the country’s economic outlook, stating that signs of recovery are gradually emerging. He explained that his administration inherited a fragile economy but has taken decisive steps to stabilise the financial system and prevent a deeper economic crisis.
Tinubu revealed that ongoing reforms have begun to ease some of the pressures faced by both federal and state governments. According to him, one indication of improvement is that state governments are no longer forced to rely heavily on bank loans to meet basic obligations such as the payment of workers’ salaries.
He further stated that the government is prioritising the welfare of retirees, with efforts underway to ensure that pension payments are settled progressively.
The President reiterated that his administration will continue implementing policies aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s economic foundation and improving the quality of life for citizens. He highlighted sectors such as agriculture and education as critical areas receiving increased government attention, noting that investments in these sectors are essential for long-term national development and future prosperity.
Tinubu also urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and supportive of ongoing reforms, assuring them that the government remains focused on building a secure and economically stable nation.
Speaking on behalf of the traditional and religious leaders present, the Etsu Nupe, Yahaya Abubakar, commended the President for organising the interfaith gathering. He said the event demonstrated the importance of unity and mutual respect among Nigeria’s diverse religious communities.
The traditional ruler offered prayers for peace and stability in the country, asking for divine guidance for Nigeria’s leaders and protection for the nation as it confronts its challenges.
Abubakar attended the event representing the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III. He emphasised that cooperation between religious leaders and government authorities remains vital in fostering national harmony and unity.
