A delegation of prominent Igbo spiritual mothers has visited the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, urging authorities to release him without further delay.
The group, led by Oliaku Chika Ibeneme, undertook the visit as part of what they described as a spiritual and cultural mission on behalf of Igbo women regarded as custodians of ancestral traditions across Igboland.
Ibeneme, widely respected with the title Nne Mmanwu Igbo Niine—meaning Mother of All Igbo Masquerades—is also a former commissioner for Works and Housing in Anambra State. According to a statement issued after the visit, the delegation conveyed what they described as “maternal solidarity and spiritual encouragement” to Kanu, whom they referred to as a valued son of the Igbo nation.
During the visit, the spiritual leaders reportedly offered prayers and invoked ancestral blessings while presenting symbolic items intended to express their cultural support and spiritual connection with the detained separatist leader. They stated that their action represents the collective voice and guardianship of Igbo spiritual mothers who believe their intervention is necessary at a critical moment.
The group explained that their involvement reflects the deep cultural tradition in which spiritual custodians speak on matters affecting the wellbeing of the community. According to them, both the living and the ancestors are spiritually invested in ensuring justice, peace, and balance within the land.
Nationwide Advocacy Plans
Beyond the prison visit, the delegation disclosed plans to expand their advocacy efforts across different parts of Nigeria. They said they intend to meet with influential traditional rulers, community leaders, and other respected spiritual authorities in order to encourage dialogue and build broader support for Kanu’s release.
The spiritual mothers emphasized that their campaign will focus on peaceful engagement, consultations, and prayers. They called on Igbo people at home and in the diaspora, as well as Nigerians who believe in justice and fairness, to support efforts aimed at resolving the matter peacefully.
Continued Debate Over Kanu’s Detention
Kanu, the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, has remained in custody while legal proceedings surrounding his case continue. His detention has remained a contentious national issue, drawing reactions from political leaders, civil society organizations, cultural groups, and supporters across Nigeria and beyond.
Advocates for his release argue that resolving the situation through dialogue could help ease tensions in the southeastern region, while others maintain that the legal process should take its course.
As discussions around his case persist, the latest visit by Igbo spiritual mothers adds another layer of cultural and moral pressure from traditional stakeholders seeking a resolution.
