Adamu Atiku Abubakar, the son of former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking another development in the ongoing political realignments in Nigeria.
In a formal letter addressed to the chairman of the PDP in Jada 1 Ward, located in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Adamu announced that his resignation from the party takes immediate effect. In the correspondence, he informed the ward leadership that he was withdrawing his membership from the PDP and would no longer be affiliated with the party.
“I hereby formally resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at Jada 1 Ward with immediate effect,” he wrote in the letter, requesting that the notice be officially communicated to the appropriate party authorities.
Despite his departure, Adamu expressed appreciation to party leaders and members in his ward for their cooperation and support during his time in the PDP. He acknowledged the opportunity he had to serve within the party structure and thanked members for the encouragement he received over the years.
The move comes at a time when several political figures are reconsidering their affiliations ahead of future electoral contests in the country. Political observers say such shifts are becoming more frequent as parties reposition themselves for upcoming political battles.
Adamu’s resignation from the PDP follows closely after he stepped down from his role as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development in Adamawa State. His exit from the cabinet was conveyed in a letter dated March 2, 2026, addressed to the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.
In that letter, he explained that his decision came after careful thought and personal reflection. While leaving the position, Adamu described his time in office as an honour and expressed gratitude to Governor Fintiri for entrusting him with the responsibility to serve the state.
He also extended appreciation to the people of Adamawa State for their support throughout his tenure, offering prayers for continued progress and stability in the state.
Adamu’s political moves have drawn attention particularly because they come shortly after Governor Fintiri reportedly defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a development that has sparked discussions about shifting alliances within Adamawa’s political landscape. Analysts believe the recent resignations and party exits may signal broader political changes as politicians begin to reposition ahead of future elections.
