Security agencies have apprehended four individuals suspected of banditry near Akure Airport after a coordinated security operation involving aviation authorities, the military, and local security groups.
The incident was confirmed in a statement released late Sunday by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). According to the agency, the suspects were initially spotted behind the airport’s perimeter fence in the direction of the Eleyewo community. Their presence in the restricted area immediately raised security concerns, prompting authorities to respond swiftly.
Once the suspicious movement was detected, aviation security officials and other law enforcement units quickly mobilised to secure the vicinity and prevent any potential threat to airport operations. FAAN explained that a joint task team consisting of several security organisations was deployed to search the area and track down the suspects.
The operation involved personnel from FAAN’s Aviation Security unit, the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Police Force, along with operatives from the Amotekun Corps and local community vigilante groups. Working together, the team conducted a coordinated sweep of the surrounding environment.
During the search, several individuals believed to be connected to the suspicious activity attempted to escape from the location. Security operatives pursued them, leading to the successful arrest of four suspects believed to be involved in bandit-related activities around the airport area.
FAAN confirmed that the arrested individuals have been transferred to the appropriate police authorities for further questioning and investigation. Officials from the police are expected to determine the suspects’ identities, possible criminal links, and whether they posed a direct threat to airport security.
The airport authority praised the rapid response and cooperation among the various security agencies involved. FAAN noted that the seamless collaboration between aviation security personnel, military forces, police officers, and community-based security groups played a crucial role in ensuring the suspects were apprehended without incident.
Authorities also reassured the public that security around the airport remains tight and that measures are continuously being strengthened to safeguard passengers, airport staff, and surrounding communities. The successful operation, according to FAAN, highlights the importance of inter-agency cooperation in maintaining safety within critical national infrastructure such as airports.
