The British government has announced the official schedule for the upcoming state visit of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Windsor Castle, a diplomatic engagement slated to take place from March 17 to March 19.
According to details released by UK authorities, the visit will feature a mix of ceremonial events, high-level diplomatic discussions, and engagements with members of the Nigerian diaspora living in the United Kingdom. The trip is expected to strengthen diplomatic relations and deepen cooperation between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
Preparatory activities for the state visit are scheduled to begin on March 17. These preparations will include enhanced security measures, traffic management across key routes in Windsor, and rehearsals for the ceremonial procession that will accompany the president’s arrival. British officials indicated that extensive arrangements have been put in place to ensure the visit proceeds smoothly and reflects the importance both nations attach to their bilateral relationship.
President Tinubu is expected to arrive officially on March 18, where he will be welcomed by Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales. A formal reception ceremony will take place along Datchet Road, featuring the playing of the national anthems of both countries and an inspection of the guard of honour.
Following the ceremonial welcome, the Nigerian president will participate in a traditional carriage procession that will convey him to Windsor Castle. Upon arrival at the historic royal residence, he will be received by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, who will serve as hosts during the official state visit.
The visit carries historical significance, as it marks the first time in nearly four decades that a Nigerian head of state has undertaken a formal state visit to the United Kingdom. Diplomats view the trip as a signal of renewed commitment to cooperation in areas such as trade, security, and cultural exchange between the two countries.
President Tinubu will be accompanied by Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, throughout the two-day programme. The visit follows an official invitation extended earlier in February 2026 by Buckingham Palace, underscoring the importance the British monarchy places on strengthening ties with Nigeria.
