President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to confirm the reappointment of Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu as the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Enugu State. The request was conveyed in a letter presented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Thursday’s plenary.
The president explained that Chukwu—who is completing his first tenure and holds a doctorate—has been nominated for a second and final term as Enugu State’s representative on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Tinubu reminded lawmakers that the nomination aligns with the provisions of Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). He urged the Senate to give the request prompt consideration.
After reading the letter, Akpabio directed the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters to conduct a screening exercise and submit its findings within two weeks.
Beyond electoral matters, the president also approved new leadership for several federal government parastatals. According to a statement issued on Friday by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu inaugurated new boards for the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF), the Bank of Agriculture (BOA), and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
At UBEC, Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura—appointed earlier in July—remains board chairman. The newly constituted board includes Uchendu Ikechi Mbaegbulem (South East), Gift Ngo (South South), Mrs. Ibiwunmi Akinnola (South West), Dr. Meiro Mandara (North East), Dr. Abdu Imam Saulawa (North West), and Professor Paul Ibukun-Olu Bolorunduro (North Central). Each board member is expected to serve an initial four-year term.
The president also affirmed the earlier appointment of Muhammad Babangida as chairman of the Bank of Agriculture and Ayo Sotinrin as the bank’s managing director, signaling continued efforts to strengthen key institutions responsible for agricultural development and educational governance in the country.
