The late Segun Awolowo, grandson of the iconic statesman Chief Obafemi Awolowo and former Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), was laid to rest on Friday, December 6, in a ceremony marked by deep emotion, national recognition, and an impressive turnout of dignitaries.
The funeral service, held at Our Saviour’s Church inside Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, drew family members, close friends, political leaders, business figures, and well-wishers who came together to honour the life and legacy of a man many described as principled, visionary, and selfless in his service to the nation.
Those in attendance included former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, former Senate President Bukola Saraki and his wife Toyin, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun. Their presence underscored the significance of Awolowo’s contributions to public service and national development.
President Bola Tinubu, represented by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, delivered a heartfelt tribute. He praised Segun Awolowo for his unwavering dedication to Nigeria, describing him as a patriot who approached every assignment with uncommon zeal and discipline. Tinubu highlighted Awolowo’s progression from serving as Special Assistant to the President to leading NEPC, where he championed reforms aimed at expanding Nigeria’s export potential.
The President also commended Awolowo’s pivotal role as Secretary of the National Committee for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), noting that his efforts reflected a strong belief in strengthening Nigeria’s position in African trade and fostering cooperation across the continent.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, who shared moments from the ceremony on social media, reflected on Awolowo’s ability to uphold the dignity of the Awolowo family name while carving out his own distinct legacy of leadership and integrity. He described the late statesman as a man of quiet resolve and firm values, one who dedicated his life to ideals that shaped his public service journey.
Former Senate President Bukola Saraki offered similar sentiments, calling Segun Awolowo “the very definition of a good man.” Saraki emphasised his exemplary character, saying that Awolowo lived a life rooted in purpose, empathy, and consistent service to humanity.
The funeral service also drew several former governors, including James Ibori of Delta State, Adeniyi Adebayo of Ekiti State, and Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State. Anglican bishops, priests, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and industry leaders filled the pews, reflecting the broad respect Awolowo commanded across different sectors.
Segun Awolowo passed away on November 20, 2025, at the age of 62. His family announced his passing with profound sorrow, and tributes from across the country have since highlighted his influential role in policy development, export promotion, and regional trade initiatives.
As the nation bids him farewell, Segun Awolowo is remembered as a bridge-builder, a committed public servant, and a man whose work will continue to inspire future generations.
