Mensah Omolola, popularly known across social media as AuntieEsther, has ignited intense national conversation after declining a doctor-recommended blood transfusion as part of her cancer treatment. Her refusal is rooted in her beliefs as a Jehovah’s Witness, a faith whose members abstain from receiving blood.
The controversy surrounding her decision grew significantly because Nigerians had raised more than ₦30 million to support her medical care. The fundraising effort was led by humanitarian advocate Wisdom Obi-Dickson, known on 𝕏 as @Wizarab10.
According to Obi-Dickson, donations had reached ₦30.7 million by December 1, 2025. Shortly after, AuntieEsther updated her supporters, explaining that recent medical tests showed her cancer remained confined to her breast and armpit region—news she described as encouraging.
“I know many people want an update. My results are out, and I’m grateful for all your financial support,” she wrote.
She added that her doctor planned to begin chemotherapy but advised she first receive treatment to increase her blood count. “My family and I have chosen to start with injections and foods that help improve my blood level. I respect everyone’s opinion, but this is the path we’ve chosen.”
She reassured well-wishers that she felt stronger and thanked Nigerians for their “overwhelming love and prayers.”
A Turning Point: Religious Pressure and a Difficult Choice
The situation escalated when Obi-Dickson revealed that members of AuntieEsther’s church had reportedly cautioned her that accepting a blood transfusion could lead to disciplinary measures, including potential disfellowshipping.
Doctors had presented two treatment paths:
- A standard option involving a blood transfusion, well within the current budget, or
- A costlier alternative that avoids transfusion.
AuntieEsther chose the second option to stay aligned with her faith.
“She was advised to receive a blood transfusion before starting chemotherapy, but she declined due to her religious convictions,” Obi-Dickson confirmed. He acknowledged that this choice would increase treatment expenses and prolong her recovery, but emphasized that her autonomy and beliefs must be respected.
Public Reactions: Frustration, Compassion, and Calls for Accountability
Despite the massive support given to her, many Nigerians have expressed disappointment and anger, insisting that the funds were provided to help her survive—not to finance a decision they fear may jeopardize her life.
Some critics demanded a refund of the donations.

Reality TV star Tacha also weighed in, expressing her exasperation:
“If someone chooses death, why force help on them? This isn’t religion anymore; it’s madness.”

@Preciouspaa noted that Jehovah’s Witnesses have long held strict views on blood transfusion.

Throughout the controversy, Obi-Dickson has continued to provide detailed updates on how donated funds are being spent. His latest disclosure included a receipt showing ₦74,000 spent on a type of soup AuntieEsther requested to help her maintain strength.
He reported a remaining balance of ₦30,776,252 as of December 1, thanking Nigerians for their generosity and continued concern for her wellbeing.
