UEFA and CONMEBOL have officially confirmed that Spain and Argentina will meet in the Middle East, continuing the tradition of bringing together the best teams from the two strongest football confederations.
The highly anticipated one-off match will feature Spain, who recently claimed the UEFA EURO 2024 crown, against Argentina, the champions of the 2024 Copa América. This clash of continental titans is scheduled for Friday, 27 March 2026, and will be staged at the renowned Lusail Stadium in Qatar. Kick-off is set for 9:00 p.m. local time, with the venue once again taking centre stage on the global football calendar following its role in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The event is being organised through a joint effort involving the Royal Spanish Football Federation and the Argentine Football Association, with operational responsibilities overseen by Qatar’s Local Organising Committee for football events. The choice of Qatar reflects its growing reputation as a major hub for international football, backed by world-class infrastructure and experience in hosting elite competitions.
UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin hailed the Finalissima as a symbol of football’s universal appeal and a showcase of cooperation between continents. He noted that the fixture represents more than just a match, describing it as a celebration that unites two champions while reinforcing the strong relationship between UEFA and CONMEBOL. According to him, fans can expect an unforgettable evening of top-level football and shared celebration.
The Finalissima will be contested over 90 minutes, with no provision for extra time. Should the teams be tied at full-time, the winner will be determined by a penalty shoot-out. Match officials will be jointly appointed by UEFA and CONMEBOL, and the game will utilise modern officiating tools, including VAR, goal-line technology and semi-automated offside systems, to ensure fairness and accuracy.
Beyond the excitement on the pitch, the Finalissima also underscores the expanding collaboration between UEFA and CONMEBOL. Their partnership now spans multiple areas of the game, including women’s football, futsal, youth tournaments, referee development, and technical education programmes.
