President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reconstitution of the Board of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) following the confirmation of its members by the Senate on December 16. The development marks another step in the administration’s ongoing efforts to strengthen governance and regulation within Nigeria’s power sector.
The approval was made public in a statement issued on Thursday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to the statement, the newly reconstituted board is expected to play a critical role in driving reforms in line with the Electricity Act, 2023, which seeks to modernise the electricity industry and improve service delivery nationwide.
At the helm of the commission is Dr Mulisiu Olalekan Oseni, who has been appointed as Chairman. Dr Oseni joined NERC as a Commissioner in January 2017 and later rose to the position of Vice Chairman. His appointment as Chairman takes effect from December 1, 2025, and will run until he completes his statutory ten-year tenure, as provided under the Electricity Act, 2023.
Dr Yusuf Ali has been named Vice Chairman of the Commission. He was first appointed as a Commissioner in February 2022. His elevation to Vice Chairman also takes effect from December 1, 2025, and will remain valid until the end of his first term.
Other members of the board include Mr Nathan Rogers Shatti, who is serving a second term as Commissioner, having originally been appointed in January 2017, and Mr Dafe Akpeneye, also on his second term after his initial appointment in January 2017.
Aisha Mahmud Kanti Bello continues her service as Commissioner in her second term. She was first appointed to the commission in December 2020. Dr Chidi Ike, appointed in February 2022, is serving his first term as Commissioner.
The board is further strengthened by the appointment of Dr Fouad Animashaun, who will begin his first term as Commissioner in December 2025. Dr Animashaun is an energy economist with extensive experience in Nigeria’s electricity sector and previously served as Executive Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
President Tinubu has urged the newly constituted board to intensify efforts toward consolidating ongoing reforms in the power sector. He emphasized the need for strict adherence to both the letter and the spirit of the Electricity Act, 2023, as the government seeks to create a more efficient, reliable, and sustainable electricity industry for the benefit of Nigerians.
