Manchester United legend Roy Keane did not hold back in his assessment of Mason Mount following the Red Devils’ 1-1 draw with West Ham United at Old Trafford on Thursday.
Despite his standout performance in United’s recent victory over Crystal Palace, Mount was left on the bench at the start against the Hammers, highlighting manager Erik ten Hag’s cautious approach in deploying the England midfielder. Mount eventually came on in the 78th minute for Joshua Zirkzee, but he struggled to make a noticeable impact during the final stages of the match.
Keane, known for his forthright opinions, expressed his disappointment with Mount’s display, suggesting that the midfielder appeared inexperienced and hesitant on the pitch. “When you are trying to see a game out, you look to your substitutes to make an impact. Mason Mount, when he came on, seemed like a schoolboy. Some players need a bit of time to adjust, but he didn’t show the presence you want from someone at Manchester United. In fact, his introduction appeared to lower the team’s overall energy,” Keane said, as reported by Metro UK.
The criticism underscores the challenge Mount faces in adjusting to life at Old Trafford, particularly when coming off the bench in high-pressure games.
