Super Eagles forward Moses Simon has expressed deep concern over the wellbeing of Terem Moffi after the OGC Nice striker was violently assaulted by a group of angry supporters in the aftermath of the club’s latest loss.
According to reports, tensions boiled over on Sunday night following Nice’s 3–1 defeat to Lorient — their sixth consecutive loss across all competitions. The club, currently under intense scrutiny and pressure amid fan unrest, has seen frustration rise sharply in recent weeks.
French media detailed disturbing scenes in which Moffi and his teammate Jérémie Boga were attacked by several individuals. The players were reportedly punched, kicked, and spat on, with some of the attackers aiming blows at sensitive areas of their bodies. Moffi was also subjected to racist insults during the assault.
Boga’s confrontation is believed to have stemmed from issues related to match tickets allegedly involving acquaintances from Marseille. Moffi, on the other hand, was targeted after some ultras accused him of appearing too friendly with former Lorient president Loïc Féry after the match.
Still recovering from fitness setbacks, Moffi had to be escorted away by teammates before he and Boga filed official police complaints.
Moses Simon, who reached out to Moffi shortly after the incident, told RMC Sport that his national teammate is shaken and still dealing with physical discomfort.
“I spoke with him — he’s really affected, and on top of that, he still feels pain,” Simon said. “It’s unacceptable for this to happen, especially at a major Ligue 1 club. Incidents like this have no place in one of Europe’s top leagues. I truly hope the club and the football authorities take meaningful action.”
Medical evaluations performed the following day confirmed that Moffi suffered both physical injuries and psychological distress, leading to his placement on sick leave until Sunday. Boga was also given medical clearance requiring several days of rest.
Nice issued a strongly worded statement condemning the attack, labeling the actions as “unacceptable” and affirming their support for the affected players. The French players’ union (UNFP) also voiced outrage, emphasizing that the safety and dignity of footballers “must never be compromised.”
The incident has sparked widespread criticism, prompting calls for stricter security measures and more decisive disciplinary steps to protect players from escalating fan aggression.
