The Labour Party’s factional National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, has raised concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s decision to nominate former presidential spokesman Reno Omokri for an ambassadorial position.
In a statement to Arise News, Arabambi commended the other nominees, describing them as deserving of their appointments, but singled out Omokri as a controversial choice due to his history of publicly criticising the president.
Arabambi acknowledged that, under the Nigerian Constitution, President Tinubu has the authority to select individuals for ambassadorial roles. However, he stressed that all nominations must undergo Senate confirmation before they can take effect.
“While the president has the prerogative to nominate ambassadors, these nominees must present their credentials to the Senate for approval,” Arabambi said. “I trust that the Akpabio-led Senate will act fairly. We have seen situations in the past where ministerial nominees were returned by the Senate, so the process is thorough.”
He also addressed the political controversies surrounding the nominations, noting that public criticism should not replace the formal confirmation process. “Some individuals have been vocally opposed to certain nominees, even claiming they should face legal consequences. But it is not for the public to decide; that responsibility lies with the Senate,” Arabambi added.
Regarding Omokri’s nomination, Arabambi remarked, “All the nominees appear qualified, except one—Reno Omokri. While he meets the formal requirements, his history of criticizing the president could potentially be a factor against his confirmation.”
Arabambi concluded by urging the public to follow the confirmation proceedings closely, pointing out that the Senate will scrutinize nominees’ backgrounds and credentials before making a decision.
