Trump Praises Ronaldo While Welcoming Messi to White House After Inter Miami Triumph

United States President Donald Trump sparked fresh conversations around football’s most famous rivalry after openly praising Cristiano Ronaldo while hosting Lionel Messi and his teammates at the White House.

Messi visited the presidential residence with members of Inter Miami CF following the club’s victory in the 2025 MLS Cup. The Argentine superstar was formally introduced in the Oval Office, where he exchanged greetings and a handshake with President Trump during the celebratory reception.

While welcoming the football icon, Trump described the moment as historic, noting that no previous US president had delivered such a greeting to the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

“It’s my privilege to say what no other president has ever said before — welcome to the White House, Lionel Messi,” Trump said during the reception.

However, the conversation soon shifted to the long-standing rivalry that has defined modern football. Trump revealed that his son, Barron, is a major admirer of Messi but also holds great respect for Ronaldo.

According to the president, Barron considers Messi not only a brilliant footballer but also a remarkable individual. At the same time, Trump acknowledged Ronaldo as one of the sport’s greatest competitors.

“He’s a huge fan of yours,” Trump told Messi. “He thinks you’re an incredible person. But he’s also a fan of Ronaldo. Cristiano is truly outstanding — one of the great champions and athletes the game has ever seen.”

The remarks reignited the enduring Messi-Ronaldo debate among football supporters worldwide. For nearly two decades, the two superstars dominated global football discussions, particularly during their time in Spain when Messi led FC Barcelona while Ronaldo became the face of Real Madrid CF. Their fierce competition for trophies and individual honours, including multiple Ballon d'Or titles, pushed both players to historic levels of performance.

Messi earned global recognition for his exceptional dribbling ability, vision, and creativity on the ball, while Ronaldo built his legacy through extraordinary athleticism, physical strength, and a remarkable goalscoring record.

Interestingly, Messi’s visit to Washington came only months after Ronaldo was also welcomed at the White House during a separate event in November 2025, further highlighting the immense global influence both players continue to hold.

During the ceremony, Trump also commended Messi for his continued success since joining Inter Miami and helping elevate football’s popularity in the United States.

The president pointed out that Messi recently secured the 47th trophy of his illustrious career, the highest number ever achieved by a professional footballer.

“You could have chosen to play anywhere in the world,” Trump told the Argentine legend. “But you decided to come to Miami, and we’re grateful for the excitement and attention you’ve brought to the game here.”

Messi’s move to Inter Miami has been widely credited with boosting the profile of Major League Soccer in the United States, drawing global attention and record crowds while cementing his status as one of the sport’s most influential figures. ⚽
