Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu following a deadly terrorist assault in northeastern Nigeria, warning that the federal government appears more concerned with political rivalries than addressing the country’s growing insecurity.
In a statement posted on his verified 𝕏 account on Friday, Atiku expressed deep sorrow over the violent attack in Borno State, describing the incident as another painful reminder of the persistent security challenges facing communities in the region.
According to reports, suspected terrorists carried out a coordinated assault on a military facility and an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Ngoshe, a community in Gwoza Local Government Area. The attackers reportedly abducted more than 100 residents during the raid, further escalating fears among already vulnerable populations who had sought refuge in the camp.
Reacting to the development, Atiku said the scale of the violence was “deeply troubling” and criticised what he described as an inadequate response from the federal authorities. He warned that the increasing frequency of attacks across different parts of the country has created a dangerous situation where both the government and the public risk becoming desensitised to the loss of lives.
The former vice president argued that the surge in violent incidents suggests the government may be losing control of the fight against terrorism and insurgency. He urged leaders to refocus their priorities on protecting citizens and restoring stability to affected communities.
Atiku further alleged that instead of concentrating fully on security operations, the current administration appears preoccupied with political manoeuvring and attempts to weaken opposition figures. He also accused the government of tolerating or empowering ethnic militia groups pursuing narrow interests.
“It is unfortunate that the current Federal Government appears to be losing its grip on the fight against terrorism and violent attacks,” he said. “Rather than focusing its energy on safeguarding the nation, it seems more intent on applying pressure against political opponents and enabling self-serving ethnic militia groups.”
He added that it was disturbing that officials responsible for internal security, alongside key figures within the ruling party, appear more focused on consolidating political power while civilians and members of the armed forces continue to lose their lives in violent attacks.
Atiku called on the federal government to urgently reassess its security strategy and prioritise the safety of Nigerians, stressing that the protection of lives must remain the primary responsibility of any administration.
