The Ekiti State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has elected Lanre Omolase as its new state chairman following the party’s congress held on Saturday in Ado-Ekiti.
Omolase, widely known as a close associate of former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose, emerged from the exercise that produced a fresh State Working Committee tasked with repositioning the party ahead of future political contests.
The congress, which took place under the supervision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, also saw former state commissioner Tunde Ogunleye elected as the party’s secretary.
Several other officials were chosen to fill key leadership positions within the state chapter. Babatunde Akande was elected Deputy Chairman, while Femi Philips secured the role of Publicity Secretary. Lawrence Odunayo emerged as Organising Secretary, and Olugbenga Agbede was elected Legal Adviser.
In other positions, Ayodele Oluwatoyin Bosede became the Women Leader, Banji Femi was chosen as Youth Leader, and Gani Bakare emerged as Financial Secretary. Additionally, Anike Folasade was elected Treasurer, while Ajayi Joseph took the position of Auditor.
The congress also produced senatorial chairmen across the state’s three districts. Sunday Olowolafe emerged as chairman for Ekiti South, Adeniyi Adefemi for Ekiti Central, and Segun Olatunji for Ekiti North.
Speaking during the congress, a member of the PDP National Caretaker Working Committee and the party’s candidate in the 2022 Ekiti governorship election, Bisi Kolawole, acknowledged that the party had recently faced internal disagreements and organisational setbacks.
Kolawole, however, expressed optimism that the PDP could overcome its challenges through ongoing consultations among party leaders and stakeholders across the country. According to him, the discussions are aimed at strengthening internal democracy, fostering reconciliation, and rebuilding confidence among party members.
He urged the newly elected state executives to remain committed to the ideals of the party and work collectively to restore the PDP’s influence in Ekiti State.
Kolawole emphasised that unity, discipline, and loyalty to the party’s principles would be critical if the PDP hopes to reclaim its position as a formidable political force in the state.
In his acceptance speech, Omolase called on party faithful to renew their dedication to the PDP, assuring them that the party would overcome its present difficulties.
He pledged to provide transparent and inclusive leadership while working with stakeholders across the state to strengthen the party’s grassroots structure.
Omolase also promised to lead with fairness and integrity, adding that his administration would focus on rebuilding the party and restoring its political relevance in Ekiti State.
