The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has revealed that his long-standing political association with former senator Sandy Onor came at a significant cost to the Cross River politician’s career.
Wike made the remarks over the weekend in Abuja during events marking Onor’s 60th birthday. Addressing guests at the celebration, the minister reflected on the personal and political sacrifices Onor allegedly endured because of their close relationship. According to him, Onor was denied several influential and potentially lucrative appointments simply because he enjoyed Wike’s backing, particularly during his bid for the Cross River State governorship.
Recounting specific instances, Wike said that political considerations and internal opposition prevented Onor from securing certain federal appointments. He cited developments surrounding the Niger Delta Development Commission and subsequent regional structures as examples of how Onor’s prospects were hindered.
The minister further disclosed that when President Bola Tinubu approved the creation of the South South Development Commission (SSDC), he personally proposed Onor as chairman of the new commission. Wike explained that although the chairmanship slot was initially meant for Rivers State, he was willing to forgo the opportunity in favour of Cross River State so that Onor could assume the position.
However, according to Wike, opposition emerged from within the political structure of Onor’s home state. He said he was informed that the nomination should be withdrawn. In response, Wike maintained that if the position could not be retained by Onor, it would revert to Rivers State rather than be reassigned under pressure.
Throughout his remarks, the FCT minister portrayed Onor as a loyal ally who had stood firmly by him despite the political consequences. He suggested that the former senator’s experiences reflect the realities of Nigeria’s political landscape, where alliances can sometimes come with heavy personal and professional costs.
Wike concluded by commending Onor’s resilience and steadfastness, describing his journey as one marked by sacrifice, loyalty and endurance in the face of political headwinds.
