Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen has openly criticised Galatasaray’s performance despite the Turkish champions securing qualification for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 after a dramatic tie against Juventus.
Galatasaray advanced with a 7-5 aggregate victory following a pulsating second leg at the Allianz Stadium in Turin. Carrying a comfortable 5-2 lead from the first leg in Istanbul, the visitors appeared to be in control of the tie. However, the return fixture proved far more demanding than expected.
Juventus stormed into a 3-0 lead on the night, wiping out Galatasaray’s cushion and putting the Turkish side under immense pressure. The Italian giants fed off the home crowd’s energy and dictated the tempo, forcing Galatasaray onto the back foot for long stretches.
With momentum swinging dangerously in Juventus’ favour, Osimhen stepped up at a crucial moment. His goal to make it 3-1 on the night restored a narrow aggregate advantage for Galatasaray at 6-5, calming nerves and shifting belief back into the visiting side. As tensions escalated and extra time loomed, Barış Alper Yılmaz delivered the decisive blow with a late strike that ultimately sealed qualification and ended Juventus’ hopes.
Despite the relief of progressing, Osimhen did not mask his frustration when speaking after the game. In a candid interview, he admitted the team’s display fell short of the standards required at this stage of Europe’s elite competition.
According to the striker, Juventus deserved credit for their intensity and execution, suggesting that Galatasaray were fortunate to advance. He stressed that significant improvements will be necessary if they are to compete against stronger opponents in the next round.
Osimhen also expressed concern over the team’s mentality during the most intense periods of the match. He revealed that some players appeared overwhelmed by the atmosphere and Juventus’ aggressive approach. While he attempted to rally his teammates, he acknowledged that leadership on the pitch cannot rest on one individual alone.
Interestingly, he observed that Juventus seemed even more dangerous when reduced to ten men, highlighting what he viewed as tactical lapses and a lack of composure from his own side.
With qualification secured, attention now turns to the Round of 16 draw, where Galatasaray could face formidable opposition such as Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur. Osimhen recognises the magnitude of the task ahead. While he admitted he would prefer to avoid Liverpool, he maintained that the team must be ready to confront any challenge.
The striker concluded by emphasising resilience and determination, noting that whoever they draw, Galatasaray will need to raise their level considerably if they hope to continue their European journey.
