Nigerian lawyer and human rights advocate, Deji Adeyanju, has described the removal of the immediate past Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as a case of karma playing out.
Speaking with journalists while reacting to the recent leadership change in the Nigeria Police Force, Adeyanju argued that Egbetokun’s time in office was marked by decisions that earned him widespread criticism and opposition. According to the activist, the former police chief accumulated significant hostility on behalf of his principal, President Bola Tinubu, during his tenure.
Adeyanju maintained that public officials must remember that political power is temporary and should therefore exercise caution and fairness in the discharge of their duties. He stressed that those who wield authority today may find themselves out of office tomorrow, facing the consequences of their actions.
Drawing parallels with other former government officials, including ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, Adeyanju said recent developments show that no position is permanent. He warned that leaders who allegedly used their offices to intimidate or suppress citizens should not be surprised when circumstances change.
“Karma has caught up with some of them,” he said, adding that more former office holders may face similar reckonings once they leave government positions.
Egbetokun’s removal comes amid mounting criticism from segments of the public, particularly civil society groups and activists, some of whom had questioned the legality of his continued stay in office. His tenure was frequently debated in public discourse, with accusations that he overstretched his authority and failed to address key concerns within the policing system.
Following the shake-up, President Tinubu announced the appointment of Tunji Disu as the acting Inspector-General of Police, formally decorating him in a ceremony that signaled a new phase in the leadership of the force.
The development has sparked mixed reactions across the country, with supporters viewing it as a necessary restructuring, while critics see it as part of broader political calculations within the administration.
