Portuguese heavyweights Benfica have permanently expelled five supporters following racist conduct during their UEFA Champions League knockout play-off first leg against Real Madrid in Lisbon.
The February 17 encounter was temporarily suspended for around 10 minutes after Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior reported alleged racial abuse to the match referee. The Brazilian forward appeared visibly upset during a tense exchange that also involved Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni.
In an official statement released after the incident, Benfica confirmed that disciplinary proceedings had been launched immediately after the match. The investigation concluded with the harshest penalty available under the club’s statutes — expulsion from membership.
According to the club, the sanctions were imposed after identifying behavior in the stands that was described as racist and fundamentally at odds with Benfica’s principles. The Lisbon-based side reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on discrimination, stressing that any actions that tarnish the club’s values would be dealt with decisively.
Tensions Boil Over During Heated Encounter
The controversy unfolded during a fiercely contested match. Vinícius Júnior had earlier given Real Madrid the lead and was subsequently shown a yellow card after celebrating in front of Benfica supporters. Television footage appeared to capture individuals in the crowd making offensive gestures toward him.
Matters escalated when the Brazilian forward confronted Prestianni before approaching the referee to report the alleged abuse. Shortly afterward, he left the pitch momentarily, with several Real Madrid teammates accompanying him down the tunnel. Play resumed only after a brief halt.
In another troubling moment, an object thrown from the stands struck Vinícius on the arm as he prepared to take a corner kick, further intensifying concerns about crowd behavior.

Benfica head coach José Mourinho criticised Vinícius after the game, suggesting the player’s celebratory actions had inflamed tensions among the home supporters. Meanwhile, UEFA handed Prestianni a provisional one-match suspension, ruling him out of the return leg.
The second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu saw Real Madrid secure a 2–1 victory, completing a 3–1 aggregate triumph. Vinícius once again found the net, though he was met with jeers from parts of the travelling crowd.
Amid ongoing speculation, Benfica later dismissed reports claiming that Prestianni had privately admitted to directing a racist remark at Vinícius. The club firmly denied that any such confession was made to teammates or officials.
