Two members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have formally withdrawn their support for the ongoing impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, signaling a possible shift toward dialogue and reconciliation within the state’s political landscape.
The lawmakers are the Minority Leader of the Assembly, Hon. Sylvanus Nwankwo, who represents Omuma State Constituency, and Hon. Peter Abbey of Degema State Constituency. Their decision comes amid heightened political tension surrounding the impeachment proceedings initiated against the state’s executive leadership.
Speaking during an interaction with journalists, Nwankwo and Abbey urged their colleagues in the Assembly to reconsider the impeachment route and instead embrace a peaceful and constructive approach to resolving the crisis. They emphasized the importance of stability and unity in Rivers State, warning that prolonged political conflict could negatively affect governance and development.
While acknowledging that Governor Fubara may have acted in ways that raised constitutional concerns, the two lawmakers described such actions as unintentional mistakes rather than deliberate violations. They appealed to fellow legislators to view the situation with understanding and maturity, stressing that the issues at hand could be addressed through dialogue and mutual compromise rather than impeachment.
According to them, intense pressure and appeals from various stakeholders influenced their decision to step back from the process. These stakeholders, they said, include political leaders, traditional rulers, civil society actors, and concerned citizens from within Rivers State and beyond, all calling for peace and reconciliation.
Nwankwo and Abbey further noted that the growing calls for an amicable settlement reflect the collective desire of the people to see governance prioritized over political confrontation. They expressed hope that ongoing discussions would lead to a resolution that preserves democratic values and strengthens cooperation among the arms of government in the state.
The lawmakers concluded by encouraging all parties involved to put the interest of Rivers State first and work together to restore calm and confidence in the state’s political system.
