Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Oyegun, has issued a grave warning about the state of Nigeria, saying the nation is facing a serious threat to its survival and requires immediate, collective intervention to avert collapse.
Oyegun made the remarks on Thursday in Benin City, Edo State, during an event that marked the formal entry of renowned journalist and media entrepreneur, Dele Momodu, into the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The occasion drew party members, supporters, and political stakeholders from across the state.
Addressing the gathering, Oyegun described Nigeria as being at a decisive crossroads, stressing that the choices and actions taken by citizens and political actors in the coming months would shape the country’s destiny. According to him, the moment calls for unity, courage, and a renewed sense of responsibility.
He noted that although the ADC was not yet in full campaign mode, the party was steadily mobilising and preparing for what he described as a crucial national struggle. Oyegun emphasised that the situation transcended partisan politics, framing it instead as an existential challenge that demands the involvement of all well-meaning Nigerians.
Speaking on Dele Momodu’s decision to align with the ADC, Oyegun described it as both symbolic and strategic. He praised Momodu as a man of strong values who had long played a watchdog role in Nigeria’s political space through his work in the media. According to Oyegun, Momodu’s move was not that of a career politician seeking relevance, but of a concerned citizen stepping forward to actively participate in the effort to rebuild the nation.
explained that Momodu’s decision reflected widespread frustration among Nigerians who have endured years of hardship, unmet promises, and systemic neglect. He said the veteran journalist had reached a point where observing from the sidelines was no longer enough, choosing instead to join the struggle directly in pursuit of meaningful change.
Lamenting the persistent suffering of the populace since independence, Oyegun said Nigerians have borne the weight of poor governance for decades, often without enjoying the benefits of the country’s vast human and natural resources. He warned that the continued neglect of citizens’ welfare now poses a real danger to the unity and continued existence of the nation.
The former APC chairman presented the ADC as more than a conventional political party, describing it as a movement committed to giving voice to ordinary Nigerians. He said the party’s objective is to ensure that government becomes responsive to the needs of the people, particularly those who have been marginalised and ignored for far too long.
Oyegun further stated that the ADC intends to place citizens’ welfare at the centre of governance, arguing that the people are the true owners of Nigeria and its wealth. He stressed that meeting basic needs such as security, livelihoods, and dignity should be the foremost duty of any responsible government.
Concluding his remarks, Oyegun called on Nigerians to rise to the moment, insisting that the future of the country depends on the willingness of its people to demand accountability and participate actively in shaping a better nation.
