Osbourne Umahi, the first son of Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has officially joined the race for the chairmanship of Ohaozara Local Government Area in Ebonyi State after obtaining the All Progressives Congress (APC) nomination and expression of interest forms on Friday.
Osbourne arrived at the APC state secretariat in Abakaliki in the company of a large and enthusiastic crowd of supporters, who escorted him to the party office in a show of solidarity and support. He was warmly received by members of the party’s State Executive Committee, led by the Ebonyi State APC Chairman, Stanley Okoro-Emegha.
Speaking during the event, Okoro-Emegha praised Osbourne Umahi as a bright, competent, and visionary young leader with both political insight and business experience. He expressed confidence that Osbourne possesses the capacity to effectively steer the affairs of Ohaozara Local Government Area and contribute meaningfully to its growth and development. The APC chairman also noted that the party was encouraged by the increasing involvement of young people in leadership and governance, particularly at the grassroots level.
After collecting the forms, Osbourne Umahi addressed journalists and expressed appreciation to the people of Ohaozara for endorsing him to seek the chairmanship position. He described the gesture as a vote of confidence and assured residents that he would justify their trust if elected.
“I am deeply grateful to the people of Ohaozara for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. I will not let them down,” he said.
The chairmanship aspirant outlined youth empowerment as a key focus of his proposed administration, emphasizing that young people are central to sustainable development and economic progress. He also pledged to consolidate and expand on the infrastructure development initiatives associated with his father’s legacy across the local government area, while introducing new ideas aimed at improving governance and service delivery.
The APC local government primaries are scheduled for January 25. Should Osbourne Umahi secure the party’s ticket, he will go on to face candidates from other political parties in the local government elections slated for August.
