Former Minister of State for Education and two-time member of the House of Representatives, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, has officially announced his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election under the banner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). His declaration marks a significant step in the early build-up to the next general elections, as political actors begin to outline their visions for Nigeria’s future.
Nwajiuba, a seasoned legal practitioner and former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), explained that his decision to seek the presidency is rooted in a strong belief that Nigeria urgently needs a shift toward competence-based leadership. According to him, the country’s persistent economic, social, and political challenges can no longer be addressed through populist rhetoric or superficial promises, but require leaders with practical experience, sound policy knowledge, and the ability to deliver measurable results.
Speaking on his ambition, the former minister emphasized that effective governance demands more than inspiring speeches. He argued that Nigeria’s complex problems require leaders who understand policy formulation, can negotiate across diverse interests, and are capable of building strong grassroots political structures. In his view, years of reliance on emotional appeals and empty slogans have done little to resolve the nation’s deep-seated issues. Instead, he called for leadership grounded in clear ideas, strategic thinking, and the competence to translate policies into tangible benefits for citizens.
Nwajiuba, who was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1989, highlighted his extensive experience across multiple arms of government as a key asset in his presidential bid. He noted that his service in the legislature, the executive arm of government, and national intervention agencies has given him a broad and practical understanding of governance, public finance, and institutional management. This exposure, he said, has prepared him to navigate the complexities of leading a diverse and populous country like Nigeria.
With his formal declaration, Nwajiuba joins a growing list of political figures positioning themselves ahead of the highly anticipated 2027 general elections. His entry into the race is expected to contribute to ongoing national conversations about leadership quality, governance reforms, and the direction Nigeria should take in the coming years.
