FIFA president Gianni Infantino has strongly criticized the disorderly scenes that marred Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, describing the events as unacceptable and damaging to the image of football. His comments followed the dramatic moment when Senegalese players walked off the pitch in protest after a late penalty was awarded to Morocco.
In a statement released on January 19, Infantino expressed deep disappointment over the actions of certain players, team officials, and supporters, stressing that such conduct has no place in the modern game. He condemned the decision by Senegal’s players and technical staff to abandon the field, emphasizing that protests of this nature undermine the authority of match officials and the integrity of the sport.
Infantino also denounced the outbreaks of violence and disorder that followed the controversial decision. He made it clear that aggression—whether from players, officials, or fans—cannot be tolerated under any circumstances, adding that football must always remain a platform for fair competition and respect.
The AFCON final descended into chaos late in injury time with the match still goalless. Following a VAR review, Morocco were awarded a penalty for a challenge on Brahim Díaz. The decision infuriated Senegal’s players, especially as it came just minutes after a Senegal goal had been disallowed for what many perceived to be a marginal foul. In response, several Senegal players left the pitch in protest, bringing the match to a standstill.
While tensions escalated, Senegal captain Sadio Mané played a crucial calming role by remaining on the field and urging his teammates to return so the match could continue. Disorder also erupted in the stands, as some Senegal supporters attempted to enter the pitch and clashed with security officials, further delaying proceedings.
After more than ten minutes of stoppage, Brahim Díaz eventually took the penalty but failed to convert, as Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy saved his weak Panenka attempt. The match proceeded into extra time, where Senegal ultimately secured a 1–0 victory through a stunning goal from Pape Gueye, clinching the AFCON title amid lingering controversy.
Despite his criticism, Infantino was quick to commend Morocco for successfully hosting the tournament, praising the country for its organization and performance as runners-up. He described the competition as a major success for the hosts, particularly significant as Morocco prepares to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
However, the FIFA president reiterated the importance of respecting refereeing decisions, regardless of how contentious they may appear. He stressed that teams must abide by the Laws of the Game and resolve disputes through proper channels rather than protests that disrupt play.
Infantino also warned that such incidents send a damaging message to fans worldwide, especially with the next FIFA World Cup approaching in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. He emphasized that players and teams have a responsibility to lead by example for the millions of viewers watching globally.
Concluding his remarks, Infantino stated that the scenes witnessed during the AFCON final must not be repeated and confirmed that he expects CAF’s disciplinary bodies to thoroughly investigate the matter and impose appropriate sanctions where necessary.
