Popular Nigerian comedian Bovi Ugboma has strongly criticized the Super Eagles following their painful semifinal defeat to Morocco at the African Cup of Nations. The loss, which came after a 4–2 penalty shootout defeat to the host nation in Rabat, brought Nigeria’s hopes of securing a fourth continental title to an abrupt end.
Reacting to the outcome, Bovi shared a video message on his Instagram page on Thursday, where he expressed deep disappointment with the players’ performance. According to the entertainer, distractions from social media, excessive praise from fans, and lingering issues around unpaid match bonuses contributed to a visible lack of hunger and passion on the pitch.
Bovi stressed that representing Nigeria should never be taken lightly, describing football as the one force that truly unites Nigerians across ethnic, religious, and political lines. He warned players against wearing the national jersey if they are not fully prepared to give their all, regardless of challenges with football authorities.
In his remarks, Bovi acknowledged the pressure players face but emphasized the responsibility that comes with playing for the national team. While he said he had forgiven Samuel Chukwueze for missing a crucial penalty, he reminded the squad that the hopes and emotions of an entire nation rest on their shoulders.
