The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reschedule the forthcoming Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, citing the overlap of the proposed election date with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
The party made this request in a formal letter addressed to INEC, drawing attention to the fact that the elections are slated for Saturday, 21 February 2026, a period that coincides with the annual Ramadan fast. According to the ADC, a large number of eligible voters in the FCT are expected to be observing the fast during this time, which could affect turnout and overall participation.
The correspondence, dated 22 January 2026, was jointly signed by the party’s National Chairman, Senator David Mark, and its National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. In the letter, the ADC emphasized that the timing of the elections during Ramadan poses potential challenges, given the religious and cultural importance of the period to many residents of the FCT.
The party explained that its appeal was motivated by the need to promote broad-based participation in the democratic process. It argued that elections should be conducted in a manner that allows all citizens to exercise their voting rights freely and without avoidable limitations. On this basis, the ADC respectfully requested that INEC consider moving the polls to a date after the conclusion of Ramadan.
According to the ADC, the request is rooted in the principle of inclusivity, noting that an effective electoral process must be sensitive to the social and religious realities of the electorate. The party stressed that no group of voters should be placed at a disadvantage due to the scheduling of elections during periods of significant religious observance.
The ADC also clarified that its engagement with INEC was purely institutional and in line with established procedures. It reaffirmed its commitment to due process and sought guidance from the Commission on the appropriate steps required to submit a formal application, in accordance with the Electoral Act, the Constitution, and INEC’s regulatory framework.
Reiterating its dedication to democratic development, the ADC stated that the credibility and legitimacy of elections are strengthened when electoral bodies adopt arrangements that encourage widespread participation and reflect respect for Nigeria’s religious and cultural diversity. The party pledged to continue advocating for electoral policies that prioritize citizens’ rights, promote inclusiveness, and build public trust in democratic institutions.
