A member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and prominent figure within the Obidient Movement, Dickson Iroegbu, has expressed the view that a political alliance between former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso could significantly alter the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Iroegbu made this assertion on Friday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, where he discussed possible realignments among opposition figures as preparations for the next election cycle begin to take shape.
According to him, a joint ticket featuring Peter Obi as presidential candidate and Kwankwaso as his running mate would pose a serious challenge to the current political order. He argued that such a combination, drawing from the popularity and political structures of both men, would be formidable enough to unsettle those currently in power.
Iroegbu noted that Kwankwaso’s recent political experiences may have positioned him to appreciate the value of collaboration rather than solo ambition. He suggested that if both politicians agree to work together, their partnership could send a strong message to the ruling establishment. In his words, a ticket led by Obi with Kwankwaso as vice president would be powerful enough to “keep the occupants of the Presidential Villa awake at night.”
Meanwhile, a public affairs analyst, Jide Ojo, has offered a different perspective on the evolving political calculations ahead of 2027. Ojo suggested that Peter Obi may reconsider his political platform if he is unable to secure a presidential ticket under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday, Ojo projected that Obi could face stiff competition within the ADC, particularly from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. He added that if the party adopts an indirect primary system, Obi’s chances of emerging as the flagbearer could be further weakened.
Ojo further opined that should Obi lose the ADC presidential ticket, the former Anambra State governor may opt to defect to another political party in order to pursue his presidential ambition in 2027. According to him, the coming months will be crucial in determining alliances, party platforms, and strategies among key opposition figures as the race toward the next general election gradually unfolds.
