Former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has formally pitched his political tent with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition landscape.
According to reports, Obi made his declaration alongside several prominent political figures from the South-East geopolitical zone. The official announcement took place on Wednesday in Enugu State, where the leaders jointly affirmed their decision to adopt the ADC as their new political platform.
Explaining the move, the group stated that their decision was driven by a shared commitment to what they described as the urgent need to rescue Nigeria from what they see as years of ineffective governance under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). They argued that the country requires a fresh political direction anchored on accountability, inclusiveness, and good governance.
The leaders further noted that the ADC offers a platform they believe is capable of uniting reform-minded Nigerians and presenting a credible alternative ahead of future elections. Obi’s defection is expected to boost the party’s profile nationally, particularly in the South-East, where he enjoys significant grassroots support.
