Raphael Onyedika walked off the pitch with a broad smile on Tuesday night, and it was not only because Nigeria recorded a convincing 3–1 victory over Uganda. The Super Eagles midfielder had once again showcased a growing on-field chemistry with Samuel Chukwueze, a partnership that proved decisive when it mattered most.
Nigeria sealed all three points against the Uganda Cranes in their final Group C fixture of the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, delivering a performance that underlined their intent in the competition. Onyedika was at the heart of the victory, producing an energetic and disciplined display in midfield before capping it off with two well-taken goals in the second half. Both strikes were expertly created by Chukwueze, whose vision and timing opened up the Ugandan defence. Paul Onuachu added a third goal to complete a dominant outing for Eric Chelle’s side.
After the match, Onyedika was full of praise for his teammate, openly acknowledging the role Chukwueze has played in his international goalscoring run. Speaking to reporters, the Club Brugge midfielder said he felt indebted to the winger for his contributions.
“I need to buy Samuel Chukwueze a gift,” Onyedika joked. “All my three goals for the Super Eagles have come from his assists. A few years ago, I never imagined I would be in this position.”
His impressive performance earned him the Man of the Match award, recognition for a display marked by intensity, smart positioning and calm finishing. For Onyedika, the individual honour carried deep personal significance.
