The leadership of the Accord Party in Osun State has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of allegedly planning to stage an unlawful parallel governorship primary as part of efforts to destabilise the party ahead of the 2026 governorship election.
In a statement issued on behalf of the party, the Osun State Chairman of the Accord Party, Victor Akande, alleged that the APC was attempting to foment crisis and confusion within the Accord Party following the emergence of Governor Ademola Adeleke as its governorship candidate. According to him, the alleged move is a calculated strategy designed to undermine the growing unity and popularity of the party across the state.
Akande claimed that the APC’s actions were driven by internal challenges within its own ranks, coupled with what he described as its inability to contend with the rising political influence and acceptance of Governor Adeleke among Osun residents. He said the opposition party was seeking to export its internal problems by instigating division within the Accord Party.
The Accord chairman further alleged that the APC was backing one of its registered members to masquerade as an Accord Party aspirant, with the intention of creating a leadership and legitimacy crisis. He warned that such actions could threaten political stability in the state if left unchecked.
“We are aware that the APC is sponsoring one of its card-carrying members to pose as an Accord aspirant in order to manufacture confusion within our party and disrupt the peace of Osun State,” Akande stated. “This is a deliberate attempt to sow discord where none exists.”
Addressing concerns raised by a faction within the party over Adeleke’s emergence as candidate, Akande reaffirmed that the processes leading to the governor’s declaration were duly endorsed by the recognised national leadership of the Accord Party. He dismissed claims questioning the legitimacy of the national leadership, insisting that all decisions taken followed established party rules and constitutional provisions.
He added that Governor Adeleke’s alignment with the Accord Party has further strengthened his grassroots support, noting that public enthusiasm for his leadership continues to grow across the state.
Akande stressed that the Accord Party remains committed to democratic principles and the rule of law, warning that any primary election or political activity conducted outside the authority of the party’s recognised national leadership would be considered invalid.
“We are a peaceful and law-abiding political party. Only primaries conducted through the appropriate and legally recognised party structures are valid. Any process outside this framework is null and void,” he said.
The party also called on security agencies, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and other relevant institutions to remain vigilant and proactive in preventing any actions capable of undermining public order.
“Osun State has moved beyond political desperation and chaos,” Akande concluded. “We urge all stakeholders to act responsibly in the interest of peace, democracy, and the will of the people.”
