Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has confirmed that teenage Brazilian forward Estevao will not be available for this weekend’s Premier League encounter against Newcastle United after picking up a muscle injury.
The 18-year-old, who has been one of Chelsea’s bright sparks this season, has made a strong impression since arriving at Stamford Bridge. Estevao has contributed five goals and one assist across 21 appearances in all competitions, quickly establishing himself as an exciting attacking option under Maresca.
The youngster was brought on in the second half during Chelsea’s recent league match against Everton but was noticeably absent from the squad that defeated Cardiff City 3-1 in the Carabao Cup quarter-final on Tuesday night. His omission raised questions, which Maresca addressed following the cup victory.
“It’s a small issue, a muscle problem,” the Chelsea boss explained. “He won’t be available for the Newcastle game. After that, we’ll assess him and see if he can be ready for the next match.”
Despite missing Estevao, Chelsea managed to navigate their way into the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a rotated lineup against Cardiff. Substitute Alejandro Garnacho made an immediate impact by opening the scoring with a calm finish. Cardiff responded through David Turnbull, who levelled the match and briefly threatened an upset.
However, Chelsea regained control in the latter stages, with Pedro Neto and Garnacho combining effectively to restore the lead and ultimately seal a 3-1 victory. The result ensured the Blues’ progression to the last four of the competition and maintained momentum during a busy run of fixtures.
Attention now shifts back to the Premier League, where Chelsea remain focused on securing a top-four finish. The upcoming clash with Newcastle United represents a significant challenge, especially without one of their emerging attacking talents. Maresca will be hoping his squad depth and recent form can compensate for Estevao’s absence as they aim to collect another crucial three points.
