Suspected kidnappers disguised in military uniforms have killed a serving soldier and abducted 13 passengers during coordinated attacks on two commercial vehicles along the Okene–Auchi Federal Highway in Kogi State.
Security sources disclosed that the incident occurred at about 5:35 p.m. on December 16, when armed men intercepted a green Toyota Sienna traveling from Abuja to Delta State with nine passengers on board. The assailants forcefully stopped the vehicle and abducted six of the occupants, while three others were rescued following a swift response by security operatives.
In what appeared to be a well-planned operation, the same group also halted a white Toyota Hiace bus conveying 11 passengers from Delta State to Abuja along the same route. Seven passengers were taken away by the attackers, while four managed to escape or were rescued during the incident.
Tragically, a Non-Commissioned Officer of the Nigerian Army who was among the passengers identified himself as a serving soldier during the attack. The gunmen reportedly shot him multiple times in the legs and thighs. He was later confirmed dead despite efforts to save his life.
The remains of the deceased soldier have been deposited at the Okengwe General Hospital mortuary for autopsy and further documentation.
Both affected vehicles were recovered from the scene and towed to a nearby police station for safekeeping as investigations continue. Security personnel also recovered five spent 7.62mm ammunition shells, suspected to have been fired from an AK-47 rifle, which are now being held as exhibits.
Statements have been obtained from the rescued passengers to assist ongoing investigations. Meanwhile, troops and other security agencies have launched joint operations, including intensive bush combing and heightened surveillance along the Okene–Auchi corridor, in a bid to rescue the abducted victims and apprehend the perpetrators.
Authorities have reassured motorists and residents that additional security measures are being deployed along the highway to curb criminal activities and prevent further attacks in the area.
