In view of this, the Nigeria Police Force has found it both necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement as a proactive measure to safeguard our communities. Consequently, enforcement of Tinted Glass Permit will resume on 2nd January, 2026. “The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, assures the public that the renewed enforcement will be carried out with utmost professionalism, respect for the rights of citizens, and in accordance with extant laws. He adds that the Force remains committed to promoting public safety and upholding the rule of law while working collaboratively with all stakeholders to keep Nigeria secure. Meanwhile, motorists who require the Tinted Glass Permit are encouraged to apply through the approved channels and ensure that their vehicles comply with legal procedures,” Hundeyin stated.

 The Nigeria Police Force has announced plans to recommence the enforcement of the tinted glass permit nationwide, citing growing security concerns and the misuse of tinted vehicles by criminal elements. The renewed enforcement will take effect from January 2, 2026, pending the final outcome of a court case related to the policy.

The development was disclosed on Monday in an official statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Benjamin Hundeyin. According to him, the decision forms part of broader efforts by the Police to curb the increasing rate of violent crimes across the country.

Hundeyin explained that the earlier suspension of enforcement had been exploited by some individuals and organised criminal groups. He noted that vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass have increasingly been used to conceal identities while carrying out crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, and other serious offences, thereby posing a significant threat to public safety.

Clarifying the legal position, the Police spokesperson stated that contrary to public speculation, no court order had restrained the Nigeria Police Force from enforcing the tinted glass permit law. He explained that enforcement was initially paused voluntarily by the Police to give motorists sufficient time to regularise their permits and comply with the law without undue pressure.

However, with the recent spike in criminal activities linked to the abuse of tinted vehicles, the Force said it has become necessary to reactivate the policy. Hundeyin stressed that the decision followed a careful assessment of prevailing security challenges and the urgent need to strengthen crime-prevention measures.

“In light of current security realities, the Nigeria Police Force has resolved that the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit must resume as a proactive step toward safeguarding lives and property,” the statement said. “Accordingly, full enforcement will recommence on January 2, 2026.”

The statement further conveyed assurances from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, who pledged that the renewed enforcement would be carried out professionally and in strict compliance with the law. The IGP emphasized that officers have been directed to respect the rights of citizens and avoid any form of abuse while carrying out their duties.

The Police leadership also reaffirmed its commitment to working collaboratively with the public and other stakeholders to enhance national security and uphold the rule of law.

Motorists who legitimately require tinted glass for medical or security reasons were advised to obtain the necessary permits through officially approved channels before the enforcement date. The Police urged vehicle owners to ensure full compliance in order to avoid sanctions when the policy takes effect.

The Force concluded by appealing for public cooperation, stressing that the measure is intended not to inconvenience law-abiding citizens but to close security gaps and reduce crime across the country.
