The Deputy Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Abdullahi Halims, has praised the efforts of the All Progressives Congress (APC)–led Federal Government in confronting the rising wave of banditry and violent crimes across Nigeria.
According to Gist Lord, the country has recently experienced a surge in security breaches, prompting President Bola Tinubu on November 26 to declare a state of emergency and authorize the recruitment of more security personnel to reinforce national safety operations.
Speaking in Abuja on Friday during the public presentation of From Silence to Strength, a new book written by Jennifer Alih, Halims reaffirmed the Federal Government’s determination to reverse the trend of insecurity. He noted that the National Assembly is prepared to support this effort by revisiting existing legislation and creating new laws where necessary.
Halims stated that the APC government has shown clear commitment to strengthening security responses, adding that lawmakers remain a crucial pillar in shaping the legal framework that underpins the fight against violence.
According to him, “The government has demonstrated strong resolve to tackle violence, banditry, and all forms of insecurity. Our responsibility as legislators is to ensure our laws are up-to-date and effective. That includes reviewing old provisions, introducing fresh ones, and making appropriate amendments.”
At the same event, the book’s author, Jennifer Alih, explained that her work was inspired by distressing statistics reflecting the widespread nature of violence in the country. She noted that behind every number lies a human life, stressing that violence affects individuals of all backgrounds and communities.
Alih highlighted that one in three people is likely to encounter violence during their lifetime, and that someone is killed by an acquaintance every 10 minutes—figures she described as a wake-up call for urgent collective action.
“These are not just statistics,” she said. “They represent real people—family members, friends, and neighbours. Violence should never be accepted as normal or inevitable. With united action, strategic investments, and the openness to acknowledge uncomfortable realities, we can prevent, reduce, and ultimately eliminate violence.”
The event underscored the growing national conversation on insecurity and the need for collaborative solutions involving government, civic groups, lawmakers, and citizens.
