Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has commended Nigeria for producing talented leaders who are making significant impacts in the United Kingdom, specifically highlighting Conservative Party politician Kemi Badenoch.
Speaking on Thursday at the ongoing Imo Economic Summit in Owerri, Johnson described Badenoch as a promising figure with the potential to become a future UK prime minister. He emphasized her strong performance in government roles, noting her growing influence within British politics.
Johnson also took the opportunity to underscore the enduring and mutually beneficial relationship between the United Kingdom and Nigeria. He highlighted the steady exchange of talent, expertise, and trade as a key factor sustaining the partnership between the two nations.
In his address, Johnson elaborated on the flow of goods and services across the two countries. He noted that the UK exports a range of products and services to Nigeria, including pharmaceuticals, financial services, automotive components, and even iconic whisky brands. In return, Nigeria contributes significantly to the UK through oil and gas, Nollywood films, skilled medical professionals, technicians, and technology experts.
“And we send you former United Kingdom prime ministers, and you send us a future United Kingdom prime minister in the form of Kemi Badenoch, who comes from Nigeria and is doing better and better these days,” Johnson remarked, drawing applause from the audience.
His comments arrive amid ongoing internal discussions within the Conservative Party about leadership succession. Recent polling has indicated pockets of dissatisfaction within the party, sparking debates about the future direction of the Tory leadership and who might step in should Badenoch decide to step aside before the next general election.
