The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has sharply criticized the Federal Government for what it describes as inconsistent approaches to security, praising its swift intervention in the recent coup attempt in the Republic of Benin while highlighting persistent delays in addressing domestic insecurity.
In a statement released on Monday and signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC acknowledged the government’s rapid response in Benin but questioned the apparent disparity in urgency compared to efforts to tackle insecurity within Nigeria.
“The ADC commends the Federal Government for acting promptly to defend constitutional order in the Benin Republic following reports of a coup attempt. Nigeria’s quick response demonstrates our nation’s capacity to uphold democracy beyond our borders,” Abdullahi said.
However, the party expressed concern over the continued insecurity plaguing Nigerian communities, questioning why similar decisive action is not taken at home. “If our government can mobilize swiftly to threats abroad, why does it continue to struggle with addressing persistent security challenges within Nigeria?” the statement asked.
The ADC further reminded the Federal Government that any deployment of military or security forces outside Nigeria’s borders must adhere to constitutional requirements, including seeking the approval of the National Assembly. According to the party, circumventing such procedures undermines democratic norms and accountability.
Highlighting inconsistencies in Nigeria’s regional security engagements, the ADC pointed to the delayed response to the unrest in Guinea-Bissau, where a former Nigerian president was reportedly caught in the turmoil. “What determines when Nigeria acts decisively and when it hesitates? Why was the response to Guinea-Bissau so delayed?” the statement questioned.
The party warned that selective engagement in regional crises risks creating the perception that foreign interests influence Nigeria’s security decisions, potentially undermining the country’s credibility as a regional leader.
While reaffirming its opposition to unconstitutional changes of government in West Africa, the ADC emphasized that defending democracy abroad cannot come at the expense of safeguarding citizens at home. “A government capable of swift action in neighboring countries must show the same commitment within its own borders. True defense of democracy starts with protecting Nigerian lives,” Abdullahi said.
The party concluded by urging regional leaders to make democracy meaningful by improving citizens’ lives and fostering a political environment where opposition voices can thrive. “The most effective defense against military adventurism is ensuring that governments are responsive to their people, delivering better governance, and respecting the role of opposition,” the ADC added.
