Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has expressed confidence that additional governors from opposition parties may soon defect to Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The governor made this remark on Wednesday in Benin City during a ceremony organized to welcome new members who recently joined the party. According to him, the APC’s influence across the country continues to grow, noting that the party currently controls 31 state governments.
Okpebholo described the development as a sign of increasing support for the APC and hinted that more political leaders are already considering joining the party. He emphasized that the growing number of governors under the APC platform reflects confidence in the party’s leadership and direction.
While addressing party members and supporters at the event, the governor also commended residents of Edo State for their unity and commitment to the party’s ideals. He said the solidarity among party faithful has strengthened the APC’s presence in the state and positioned it for future electoral victories.
Okpebholo further used the opportunity to appreciate the support of Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, describing him as a leader who has shown strong backing for Edo State. The governor pledged that the people of the state would reciprocate that support during the 2027 general elections by delivering victory for the president and the APC.
In a related development, the newly elected Edo State APC executive committee, headed by Jarrett Tenebe, has officially endorsed both President Tinubu and Governor Okpebholo for second terms in office.
This decision was announced in a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Akhere Ebojele, who explained that the endorsement followed deliberations during the party’s state congress.
During his acceptance speech, Tenebe stated that the executive committee unanimously backed Tinubu and Okpebholo to seek re-election because of what he described as their impressive performance in office. He argued that the leadership of both men has brought notable improvements to governance and contributed to the welfare of Nigerians and residents of Edo State.
The party leadership also endorsed the senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole, for another term in the National Assembly. According to Tenebe, the endorsement was based on the senator’s record of effective representation and dedication to the interests of his constituents.
Tenebe thanked party members and supporters for their continued loyalty to the APC and expressed appreciation to delegates for the confidence they showed in the newly elected executive team. He assured members that the leadership would work diligently to strengthen the party’s structure in Edo State and guide it toward greater political success in the coming years.
