The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has opened up about the challenges faced by former Cross River Central Senatorial District lawmaker, Sandy Onor, as a result of their close political alliance. Speaking during Onor’s 60th birthday celebration in Abuja over the weekend, Wike lamented that his friendship with Onor came at a cost, with the senator missing several key opportunities due to his loyalty.
Wike recounted that Onor was repeatedly sidelined from high-profile appointments simply because he had the minister’s backing during his governorship pursuit. “I remember the time at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). I called Sandy, and someone else’s name was being pushed for a position. Because I supported him for governorship, they blocked it. I told him, ‘Don’t worry; what is meant to happen will happen,’” Wike disclosed.
He further revealed that when President Bola Tinubu created the South South Development Commission (SSDC), he recommended that the Rivers State slot be offered to Onor, recognizing his contributions and dedication. Wike said, “The chairmanship of the SSDC was originally meant for Rivers State, but I insisted it go to Cross River State so that my friend could take it. Unfortunately, there were attempts to remove him from consideration. I made it clear: if they take him out, I will reclaim the position.”
Wike’s remarks highlighted the enduring loyalty and sacrifices that have characterized his long-standing relationship with Onor, painting a picture of political camaraderie that has endured despite significant obstacles.
