Six people have lost their lives and 23 others sustained varying degrees of injuries following a road traffic accident near the Foursquare Camp along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident in a statement released on Monday in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. According to the command’s Public Relations Officer, Odunsin Afolabi, the crash was caused by excessive speeding and driver fatigue, which resulted in the driver losing control of the vehicle.
Afolabi explained that the accident occurred at approximately 11:27 a.m., adding that FRSC rescue operatives from the Ogunmakin Unit Command arrived at the scene within two minutes of being alerted. The crash involved a single vehicle—a DAF CF 380 trailer with registration number SNA 287 XA.
“In total, 29 persons were involved in the crash. Sadly, six victims were confirmed dead, while 23 others sustained injuries,” he said.
He further cautioned motorists against the practice of mixed loading, particularly the transportation of cattle alongside passengers. According to him, such arrangements complicate rescue efforts during emergencies and often increase the risk of fatalities, as separating people from goods becomes difficult in the event of a crash.
The injured victims and the bodies of the deceased were evacuated to Oreoluwa Hospital at GOFAMINT Camp, Ogunmakin, as well as Victory Hospital in Ogere for medical attention and further procedures.
The FRSC used the opportunity to reiterate its call for strict adherence to road safety rules. Motorists, especially operators of commercial and heavy-duty vehicles, were advised to carry out routine servicing and thorough vehicle inspections before embarking on journeys. Drivers were also urged to avoid speeding, manage fatigue, and maintain full control of their vehicles at all times, particularly on major expressways.
