Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State on Thursday paid a courtesy visit to President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he briefed the nation’s leader on recent developments and the overall situation in the oil-rich state.
The closed-door meeting comes several months after the governor’s high-profile defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that reshaped the political landscape in Akwa Ibom.
Eno had formally announced his departure from the PDP on June 6, 2025, during an event at the Government House in Uyo, the state capital. At the time, he explained that the decision followed three months of extensive consultations with political leaders, stakeholders, and community representatives across the state. According to him, the shift was the outcome of careful reflection rather than impulsive political calculation.
While expressing appreciation to the PDP for the platform it provided during his political journey, the governor emphasized that his decision was guided by what he described as the overriding interest of the state. He noted that aligning Akwa Ibom with the ruling party at the federal level would enhance cooperation and unlock greater development opportunities.
Eno also cited his respect and admiration for President Tinubu’s leadership style as a factor that influenced his decision. He stated that collaboration with the Federal Government would help position Akwa Ibom for increased federal presence, infrastructural projects, and economic support.
In addition, the governor referenced the importance of supporting key national figures from the state, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, stressing that unity across political levels could strengthen the state’s voice in national affairs.
Addressing critics who interpreted the defection as a sign of vulnerability, Eno maintained that the move was made from a position of strength. He argued that it was a strategic step aimed at ensuring that Akwa Ibom remains competitive and well-connected within Nigeria’s broader political and economic framework.
The governor reassured residents that his change in party affiliation would not alter his commitment to governance or the welfare of the people. He pledged to continue prioritizing policies and programmes that promote economic growth, infrastructure development, and social well-being across the state.
Observers say the recent meeting with President Tinubu signals a consolidation of Eno’s new political alignment and may pave the way for closer federal-state collaboration in the months ahead.
