Werder Bremen managing director Clemens Fritz has moved to calm speculation surrounding his position at the club, firmly rejecting suggestions that his future is under threat. Despite mounting criticism following recent recruitment decisions, Fritz maintains that he continues to enjoy the confidence and backing of Werder Bremen’s supervisory board.
The scrutiny intensified after Bremen opted to bring in Nigerian forward Victor Boniface on a short-term loan, a move that followed a challenging transfer window for the club. Boniface had previously been on the verge of a high-profile switch to AC Milan, but the deal collapsed after medical concerns emerged, even though Bayer Leverkusen were believed to have agreed terms with the Italian side. Bremen saw an opportunity to help the 25-year-old rediscover his best form and added him to their squad until the end of the season.
However, the gamble failed to pay off. Boniface struggled to establish himself in the Bundesliga, managing just two assists across 11 league appearances. His campaign was then cut short by a knee injury that will keep him out for the remainder of the season, further fuelling doubts about the wisdom of the signing. Concerns over the striker’s fitness history only added to the criticism aimed at the club’s transfer strategy.
As pressure grew, Fritz was summoned for talks with the supervisory board to review recent transfer dealings, with the Boniface move a key point of discussion. Following the meeting, the Bremen executive struck a confident tone, explaining that he had outlined the reasoning behind the decision and felt his explanations were well received. According to Fritz, the board acknowledged the circumstances surrounding the transfer and continues to support his leadership as the club looks to move forward.
