The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has formally inaugurated former Lagos State Commissioner for Housing, Alhaji Rahman Akanni Owokoniran, as its South-West Zonal Chairman, reaffirming the party’s leadership structure in the region.
The swearing-in ceremony was carried out with the full authorization of the party’s National Chairman, Senator David Mark, and included the inauguration of members of Owokoniran’s zonal executive committee. The event was presided over by the Deputy National Chairman, Dr. Bamidele Ajadi, who represents the highest-ranking national officer of the party in the South-West.
Addressing reports suggesting internal crisis within the party, a senior ADC member, Coker Onita, dismissed such claims as unfounded and deliberately misleading. He clarified that Owokoniran’s appointment followed due process and enjoyed the complete backing of the party’s national leadership.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Alhaji Rahman Akanni Owokoniran was duly sworn in today as the South-West Zonal Chairman of the ADC by Dr. Bamidele Ajadi, acting with the full authority and endorsement of the National Chairman and the party’s national leadership,” Onita stated.
The ADC also rejected reports alleging that the South-West zonal leadership had been disowned by the national body, describing such narratives as false, deceptive, and aimed at confusing party members and the general public.
Onita further alleged that individuals linked to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) were behind efforts to spread misinformation in order to destabilise the ADC in the South-West, particularly as the party continues to gain traction and wider acceptance in the region.
He also discredited a statement reportedly issued by a group calling itself the “ADC Lagos State Stakeholders Forum,” describing the group as faceless and unauthorised. According to him, the group lacks legitimacy and operates as internal saboteurs bent on weakening the party from within.
“In a truly democratic party, accountability requires transparency. Anonymous accusations are acts of subversion, not reform. Anyone claiming to speak for the ADC must openly identify themselves and state the authority under which they act,” Onita said.
While reaffirming its openness to constructive criticism and lawful internal engagement, the ADC warned that it would not tolerate infiltration, falsehoods, or coordinated attempts to undermine its leadership or unity.
The party concluded by reaffirming its cohesion and commitment to offering Nigerians a credible political alternative, stressing that the South-West leadership under Alhaji Rahman Owokoniran remains legitimate, recognised, and fully supported by the ADC’s national leadership.
