Former Imo State Governor, Dr. Achike Udenwa, has formally pitched his tent with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move widely seen as a major boost to the party’s standing in Imo State as preparations begin for the 2027 general elections.
Udenwa completed his registration on Thursday at Amaifeke Ward in Orlu Local Government Area, where he was enrolled as member number 001. The registration exercise was conducted by the ward secretary, Hon. Anthony Okoro, while the ward chairman, Engr. Uzonna Oriowe, presented him with his ADC membership card in the presence of party leaders and supporters.
Among those who witnessed the event were the ADC Orlu Local Government Area Chairman, Chief Aloma Uchenna, alongside other party officials and grassroots supporters. The gathering reflected the significance attached to the former governor’s entry into the party.
Speaking shortly after his registration, Udenwa explained that his decision to join the ADC was the outcome of extensive consultations and deep reflection. He described the party as a credible platform that promotes internal democracy, accountability and people-oriented governance.
According to him, many of the individuals within the ADC are people of proven integrity, some of whom he had previously worked with during his time in office. He said his move was inspired by a renewed desire to serve the people and contribute to strengthening governance in Imo State and across Nigeria.
Udenwa noted that being registered as member number 001 in his ward was symbolic, stressing the importance of starting his political journey in the party from the grassroots. He expressed satisfaction in beginning from his home ward, adding that the ADC would be built collectively to truly reflect the interests and aspirations of the people.
The Imo State Chairman of the ADC, Prof. James Okoroma, led members of the State Executive Committee and stakeholders from the Orlu Zone to formally receive the former governor into the party. Other notable figures present included Prof. Francis Ukaigkwe, Dr. Vin Udokwu and several party chieftains.
Describing Udenwa’s defection as a milestone, Prof. Okoroma said the former governor’s entry had significantly strengthened the ADC in Imo State. He noted that registering Udenwa as number 001 in Amaifeke Ward highlighted the party’s emphasis on grassroots mobilisation and its broader strategy for statewide growth.
Okoroma further disclosed that since the party’s declaration in Enugu on December 31, 2025, the ADC had continued to attract influential politicians from different backgrounds, a development he said underscored growing confidence in the party.
In separate remarks, the Amaifeke Ward Chairman, Engr. Uzonna Oriowe, as well as the ADC Orlu Zonal Chairman, Hon. Ezeru Damian, and the Orlu LGA Chairman, Chief Alloy Oluigbo, welcomed Udenwa’s decision. They described him as a seasoned leader whose tenure in office was associated with good governance, noting that his entry signalled a new wave of political momentum in the state.
In his closing remarks, Udenwa pledged total loyalty to the ADC and reaffirmed his commitment to helping build a strong political platform capable of addressing leadership shortcomings. He explained that his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was driven by a desire to support a movement focused on reform, discipline and visionary leadership.
He called on Imo residents to embrace the ADC in large numbers, describing the party as a vehicle for political renewal and improved governance. Udenwa also urged party leaders and members to remain united, inclusive and focused as the party continues to grow, stressing that unity and hard work would be key to electoral success and restoring hope to the people.
