President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly ordered the temporary suspension of the All Progressives Congress (APC) electronic membership registration exercise in Kano State, as preparations intensify for the expected defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the ruling party.
The decision is said to be linked to a scheduled meeting between President Tinubu and the Kano State governor at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja, where final arrangements are expected to be concluded regarding Yusuf’s planned exit from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the APC.
According to sources familiar with the development, Governor Yusuf has remained in Abuja for several days in anticipation of a face-to-face meeting with the President. President Tinubu, who had been out of the country, reportedly returned late on Wednesday and specifically requested that the governor wait to see him immediately upon his return before taking any decisive political steps.
Further confirmation came from the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Downstream Petroleum, Alhassan Doguwa, who disclosed that the APC e-registration exercise in Kano was deliberately put on hold following instructions from President Tinubu and the party’s National Chairman. He explained that the move was strategic, aimed at ensuring that Governor Yusuf is formally received into the APC before the registration process begins.
Doguwa noted that the party leadership wants the governor to symbolically lead the registration exercise as his first official act as a member of the APC. “The APC e-registration in Kano could not commence because President Tinubu and the National Chairman directed that Governor Yusuf should be allowed to be the first to register,” he said. The lawmaker made the remarks while addressing supporters in a video that has since gained widespread attention on social media.
While the Presidency and the APC’s national headquarters have yet to release an official statement on the matter, party insiders suggest that the suspension highlights the importance the APC is placing on Yusuf’s anticipated defection. Sources believe the move could have far-reaching implications for the party’s internal dynamics and political strategy in Kano State.
The expected meeting between President Tinubu and Governor Yusuf is widely seen as a crucial step toward formalising the governor’s entry into the APC, after which other party activities, including the stalled registration exercise, are likely to resume.
