The immediate past Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State, Hashimu Dungurawa, has appealed to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to reconsider reports of his planned defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that such a move could jeopardize his political future.
Speaking in an interview on Sunday, Dungurawa expressed confidence that Governor Yusuf’s re-election bid in 2027 would be secure if he remained within the NNPP. However, he cautioned that crossing over to the APC could expose the governor to intense political opposition and internal hostility.
According to Dungurawa, Yusuf currently enjoys widespread goodwill and unchallenged support within the NNPP, a situation he described as rare and politically advantageous. He argued that leaving the party would create a leadership vacuum that would be difficult to fill, both for the party and for the governor’s political structure in Kano State.
He further described the APC as an unfriendly terrain for the governor, suggesting that many of Yusuf’s political rivals are already entrenched within the ruling party at the national level. In his view, joining such a camp would weaken the governor rather than strengthen his prospects.
Dungurawa stressed that the NNPP remains united behind Governor Yusuf and that there are no internal battles or factions working against him. He noted that party members are firmly committed to his success and are willing to mobilize fully to ensure his continuity in office.
The former party chairman maintained that Governor Yusuf’s return for a second term would be almost guaranteed if he stayed with the NNPP. He argued that the governor currently occupies a position of strength and stability, which could be lost if he defects to another party where political pathways are less certain.
Reaffirming the party’s readiness to back the governor, Dungurawa pledged total support for Yusuf’s re-election in 2027. He dismissed the political strength of rival parties in Kano, insisting that the NNPP remains the dominant force in the state and is well positioned to defeat both the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the next election cycle.
He questioned the rationale behind leaving a party where the governor is politically comfortable and widely supported, warning that unnecessary political realignment could undermine years of grassroots organization and loyalty.
Meanwhile, Governor Yusuf is also facing mounting pressure from loyalists of the NNPP’s national leader and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, whose political base is popularly known as the Kwankwasiyya Movement. The group is reportedly intensifying efforts to prevent any alliance between Yusuf and the APC.
Sources close to the movement revealed that key stakeholders have cautioned the governor against ignoring their position, warning that a defection could carry serious political consequences ahead of the 2027 general elections. As discussions continue behind the scenes, the debate over the governor’s political future has further highlighted the high stakes of party loyalty and alignment in Kano State’s evolving political landscape.
