The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed Moroccan official Jalal Jiyed as the referee in charge of today’s third-place playoff at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), featuring Nigeria’s Super Eagles and the Pharaohs of Egypt.
The encounter will take place at the iconic Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca, with both teams aiming to close out their AFCON campaigns on a positive note after narrowly missing a place in the final. Kick-off is set for 5:00 pm West Africa Time.
Jiyed will be assisted on the sidelines by Zakaria Brinsi, Akarkad Mostafa and Hassani Khalil, while Peter Waweru Kamaku has been appointed as the fourth official. The video assistant referee (VAR) team will be led by Algeria’s Lahlu Benbraham, supported by Haythem Guirat and Hamza El Fariq. Sinko Zeli has been named referee assessor for what is the penultimate fixture of the tournament.
Nigeria head into the playoff following a heartbreaking semi-final exit against tournament hosts Morocco, where the Super Eagles were eliminated on penalties after an evenly contested match. Egypt also suffered disappointment in the last four, falling to a narrow 1–0 defeat against defending champions Senegal in a tightly fought contest.
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has emphasized the importance of ending the tournament with pride and building momentum for future competitions. Similarly, Egypt’s head coach Hossam Hassan sees the third-place match as an opportunity to secure a podium finish, lift team morale, and restore confidence after their semi-final setback.
