The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco has rewritten the history books, emerging as the most prolific goal-scoring edition the tournament has ever witnessed. With attacking football on full display, this year’s competition has set a new standard for entertainment and offensive quality across the continent.
As the tournament reached its closing stages, a total of 120 goals had already been scored—surpassing the previous record of 119 goals achieved at the last AFCON finals in Ivory Coast. Remarkably, this milestone was reached even before the third-place playoff between Nigeria and Egypt and the highly anticipated final clash featuring host nation Morocco against defending champions Senegal.
The achievement highlights the attacking evolution of African football. The earlier record of 119 goals was set during the 2023 tournament, the first AFCON to fully embrace the expanded 24-team format. Before that, the 2019 edition in Egypt produced 102 goals, a figure that once seemed impressive but has now been comfortably eclipsed. AFCON 2025 has gone a step further, powered by sharp tactical play, quick transitions, and the clinical edge of the continent’s finest forwards.
Individually, several stars have stood out. Morocco midfielder Brahim Díaz has led the scoring charts with five goals, playing a pivotal role in his team’s journey to the final. Close behind are Nigeria’s prolific striker Victor Osimhen and Egypt’s talismanic captain Mohamed Salah, both of whom have netted four times and consistently influenced matches at the highest level.
Osimhen’s performances, in particular, have drawn admiration beyond the pitch. Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan openly praised the Nigerian forward, describing him as his favourite striker in world football. Speaking during an appearance on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, Gyan highlighted Osimhen’s passion and commitment to the game.
“Victor Osimhen plays with his heart. He gives everything on the pitch,” Gyan said. “I’m surprised the biggest clubs in the world haven’t moved for him yet. I’m appealing to Manchester United to come for him.”
