Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has expressed his full backing for DR Congo as the nation prepares for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The tournament, widely regarded as a showcase of African football talent, will kick off on December 21 in Morocco, and Kompany emphasized its significance for players and clubs alike.
Describing AFCON as a defining stage for African footballers, Kompany stressed that the competition warrants the respect of European clubs. Bayern Munich, he confirmed, will stand firmly behind their players selected for national duty, ensuring they have the support needed to compete at the highest level.
Kompany’s support for DR Congo goes beyond professional responsibility—it is deeply personal. “My father, Pierre, is Congolese and has dedicated himself to projects providing education and safe housing for children in need. Congo is an integral part of my heritage, so it is natural for me to cheer them on during this tournament,” he explained.
The former Belgium captain also provided an update on Senegalese striker Nicolas Jackson, confirming that the player would join his national squad following Bayern’s 2-2 Bundesliga draw against Mainz on December 14. “From what I know, Jackson will depart for Senegal right after the Mainz game. We hope he makes a deep run in the tournament,” Kompany said.
While expressing loyalty to DR Congo, Kompany did not hesitate to offer his well wishes to Jackson and Senegal should his preferred team not prevail. “If Congo doesn’t win, I sincerely hope Jackson has a successful campaign. The importance of AFCON for African players cannot be overstated,” he added.
Kompany also praised Jackson’s contributions to Bayern Munich this season. Despite competition for starting positions from star striker Harry Kane, the young forward has impressed with his efficiency and work ethic. “I am very pleased with Nicolas. His goals-per-minute ratio is excellent, and he handles competition in the squad with maturity. What many fans don’t see is his commitment in training and every minute he spends on the pitch. I hope he continues to make the most of his opportunities,” Kompany said.
